Portrait Photography: Studio vs On Location
Which is better for portrait photography, studio or on location? Have a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages listed below and see what you think.
Advantages of Studio:
- Weather is not a problem.
- The session can be any time of the day or night
- The lights are controlled.
- It is easier to change clothes and adjust make up.
- You can set up different lights to give different effects.
- It is more private
Disadvantages of Studio:
- The light is usually colder.
- The backgrounds are usually not as interesting.
- It is more private
As you can see, the fact the studio is more private can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. If you have confidence in the photographer it is an advantage. If you don’t know the photographer or are not sure, you should always be able to bring a friend or partner.
Advantages of On Location:
- You can have beautiful backgrounds.
- The light is warmer if you choose the right time of day.
- A dull day is actually better for a portrait shoot as the light is softer.
Disadvantages of On Location:
- Weather
- To get the best light better to be within 90 minutes of sunset or sunrise.
- If you shoot when it is sunny you can get harsh shadows
- More difficult to change outfits and retouch make up.
- Less privacy.
In the end it is a matter of personal choice. Which would you prefer, and why?
